Next phase of Coney Street tipped to progress
City of York Council is expected to approve works to a row of three grade two-listed buildings and the creation of a walkway between the street and the riverside in the latest chapter of Helmsley’s masterplan.
Plans for new shopfronts on the ground floor units and extensions to the roofs to create an additional storey for resi-use on Nos3-7 Coney Street will go before the council on 28 November, recommended for approval.
The project team for the wider Coney Street scheme also includes brown + company, O’Neill Associates, Corstorphine and Wright, Montagu Evans, Aspect4, Gillespies, Troup Bywaters & Anders, Billinghurst George & Partners, Jane Simpson Access, Knight Frank, DS Emotion, and Aberfield Communications.
Partial demolition of the middle building, No5 Coney Street, will allow space for the walkway connecting the shopfronts to the River Ouse.
The ground floor will be opened up, with the path connecting through to four sets of steps that lead down towards the river.
The front of No3 and No7 will remain as retail use, with the rear of the properties converted into restaurants. The upper floors will be used for resi purposes.
Terraced areas overlooking the river will provide seating for the two restaurants.
New shopfronts will be provided to No3 and No7, including a shopfront surround to the right-hand side of the walkway entrance on Coney Street.
