Nation of Shopkeepers plots Leeds hotel

The bar on Cookridge Street, located between Millenium Square and the Headrow, has applied to convert the vacant first and second floor offices into 42 hotel rooms.

The project team includes Nation of Shopkeepers owner and applicant Mitchells & Brothers Retail, architect Allison Pike, and consultant JTS Partnership.

If approved, the hotel rooms would be operated under the Innkeepers Collection hotel chain and alongside the pub, which occupies the ground floor.

Proposed work includes internal alterations, a layout change for the basement floor so the back-of-house area can also accommodate the hotel, the installation of an external service lift in the courtyard, and minor external alterations.

The hotel would use one of the existing entrances to the pub from Cookridge Street and will have a separate reception area on the first floor.

Located in the city centre, the grade two-listed building is at the corner junction of Great George Street and Cookridge Street, adjacent to Leeds Cathedral and Millennium Square.

Previously, it has served as shops, offices, and warehouses, and two ground floor units, excluded from the application, will remain let out as a hair studio and an account’s office.

Constructed between 1840-1847, the D&A statement highlights how the scheme would enable the building to return to active use while conserving its heritage characteristics.
