HBC completes £17m The Spark in Sheffield
The 43,000 sq ft building will house the National Centre for Child Health Technology and is set to become operational later this year.
The flagship project was delivered by HBC in partnership with Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, and was funded by the Trust as well as the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, Sheffield City Council, and Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity
Located at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, the purpose-built facility brings together global clinical expertise within modern, technology-enabled spaces.
The aim is for the space to drive the development of healthcare technologies for children across the NHS and internationally.
The centre was jointly designed by HLM Architects and Whittam Cox Architects, with Ian Sanderson on planning.
It is part of the government’s 10-year strategy to move patient care out of hospitals and into community-based centres, to make better use of technology, and focus on sickness prevention, rather than cure.

“As we celebrate 150 years of Sheffield Children’s, we are proud to open a new facility that will transform care today while also becoming the home of the National Centre for Child Health Technology, helping shape the future of children’s healthcare for generations to come.
“The Spark has been shaped through partnership, ambition and a shared belief that every child deserves the very best healthcare. Working with children and young people, clinicians, colleagues who support our services, and our construction partner, HBC Construction, we have designed and delivered a new space that will help us in our mission to create healthier futures for children and young people.”
