All guns blazing for MoD Catterick plans

Two accommodation blocks and a strength and conditioning centre for Marne Barracks are recommended for approval at North Yorkshire’s planning meeting this week.

Phase four of the wider redevelopment of Catterick Garrison, the project team includes Tetra Tech Planning, Morgan Sindall, and HLM Architects, on behalf of the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation.

Located in off Leeming Lane and around 1.5km from Catterick and 8km from Richmond, the 163-acre site is a self-contained military facility with no direct public access.

The two accommodation blocks would each house 85 bedrooms and, according to the design and access statement, the improved facilities would help the retention rate for the armed forces.

In keeping with the other buildings on site, the height would remain low, at a maximum of 12.5 metres.

The same applies to the strength and conditioning centre, and plans also include garages, workshops, car parking, pedestrian and cycle paths, and soft landscaping, and a rugby pitch added in to appease an earlier objection from Sport England.

Other plans going ahead from the MoD at Catterick Garrison include its first-ever joint healthcare facility with the NHS, which is being constructed by Tilbury Douglas and is on track to complete by next summer.

Meanwhile, the village itself is undergoing a £19m revamp, paid for by Levelling Up funds and with Willmott Dixon appointed as main contractor last August.

Constructed as an RAF depot in 1914, the site later closed in 1994 and was transferred to the army.

The scheme is recommended for approval.
