VIDEO | How Gascoigne Interchange will be an economic gamechanger for North Yorkshire

Thousands of jobs are set to be created as a result of Harworth’s 1.5m sq ft industrial and logistics development on the 185-acre old colliery site.

Place North joined Harworth, Keir Mather MP, and Mayor of York and North Yorkshire David Skaith, for a tour of Gascoigne Interchange, hearing more about the developer’s ambitions for the brownfield site near Selby.

With access to rail sidings for Network Rail’s Leeds to Hull main line, Gascoigne Interchange has the potential to help further decarbonise freight by providing low-carbon rail options for the transportation of goods. Add to that its substantial power access and floorplates of up to 1m sq ft and it is clear this is a site ready for business.

When work completes and the site is occupied, Harworth estimates it could create 4,500 full-time jobs and generate a nearly £300m economic uplift to the area.

Mather described the project as “incredibly exciting” for its ability to regenerate a brownfield site and bring so many job opportunities to the area.

“Even though this site hasn’t been operational for decades now, the structure of it is still there to ramp back up and get back to being a thriving industrial hub once again,” Mather said.

“I think it just goes to show that in this part of North Yorkshire, we know how to make large-scale enterprises like this work. We know how to create those jobs of the future and really power industry in this country,” the MP continued. “We just need to be given the tools to make it a reality.”

Skaith also spoke about how Gascoigne Interchange fits in with his ambitions for North Yorkshire.

“For a long time, we’ve been known as the nice place, the pretty place,” he said.

“We do a lot of leisure tours hospitality – which is fantastic, and we will continue to do that – but we know we have huge growth potential around agriculture, biotech, rail, and manufacturing in particular,” Skaith said.

“Those are sort of jobs and industries and businesses that could come into places like this. So having this right on our doorstep, creating new jobs, bringing new industry, is going to be incredibly important to our growth plans that we want to push forward over the next give, 10, 15 years.”

Work on Gascoigne Interchange is set to begin next year. The agents for the industrial and logistics development are Knight Frank and GV Property & Co.
