Work starts at YAA North Yorkshire base
Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s Skipton-on-Swale 15,000 sq ft site will provide a permanent home for the charity and is being constructed by HACS Group.
Designed by Leeds-based Group Ginger, plans include a two-storey hangar, a helipad, and a wellness area for crew members.
Planning permission for the scheme was granted in June.
The ground floor of the hangar is sized to accommodate two Airbus H145 aircrafts, with space for meeting rooms, storage, and equipment.
Meanwhile the first floor has a boardroom with kitchenette, and four bedrooms with access to a breakout lounge and gym.
The building has been designed to BREEAM Excellent standard, will be heated by air source heat pumps, and solar panels will produce energy for the site.
Funding for the project is expected to come from a mix of savings, donations, and government grants.
The base will mirror the facilities established at YAA’s Nostell air support unit near Wakefield, and will provide a long-term home for the charity, ensuring both stability and a commitment to advancing its capabilities in the future.
The base is being built on land used by the RAF during World War Two, which subsequently reverted to agricultural use.
