Wetherby Lidl gets the go-ahead

More than 2,000 residents consulted were in favour of the construction of the supermarket and care home on the site of the Mercure hotel, following Leeds City Council’s rejection of the plans earlier this year.

The Planning Inspectorate overrode the decision and now the Lidl will go ahead, alongside an 84-bed care home and senior living eco-homes on Leeds Road.

The store will include 16,000 sq ft of shopping area, and there will be parking provision for cars and bicycles, with EV charging points.

Caddick Construction will develop the site.

Liam Schofield, Lidl GB’s regional head of property, said: “Over the past couple of years, our dedicated property team has worked tirelessly to make this happen, and we are incredibly grateful to the local community for their unwavering support.”

Graeme Lee, chief executive of Springfield Healthcare, added: “It’s terrific to receive planning permission for our innovative and exemplar care development in Wetherby. We’re sure it will have a tremendous impact within the community and will play a vital role in meeting the increasing local need for high quality care provision.”
