Thirsk bank conversion gets the green light
Despite being recommended for refusal, the former Barclays building will become a discount store with a 6,000 sq ft rear extension and two flats created on the first floor.
The Yorkshire Trading Company applied for permission for the conversion, supported by Gracey Architectural.
With a total retail area of 7,900 sq ft, the front of the building will remain largely unchanged, to remain in keeping with the town’s heritage and character.
The two flats will both have two bedrooms, with one being 670 sq ft and the second being 760 sq ft.
Work will also include internal demolition to provide an open-plan floorplan.
The building is located on Market Place, and backs onto Chapel Street. It is not listed, but is within the town’s conservation area.
During the application process, Historic England had noted it was concerned the scheme would harm the local conservation area.
Another concern raised was that the conversion would have an ‘overbearing impact’ on a nearby home.
