Springs Leisure Centre moves forward in Sheffield

Plans for the £51m redevelopment will be considered by the council’s finance committee next week and if approved, Willmott Dixon will begin construction on the scheme towards the end of next year.

Springs would be the first of two major leisure redevelopments in the city, alongside the planned rebuild of the Concord centre, under the city’s Sport and Leisure Strategy.

Both venues are operated by Everyone Active, which also manages eight other facilities in the city, including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, the English Institute of Sport Sheffield, and iceSheffield.

A full rebuild of Springs Leisure Centre was identified as the most cost-effective and future-proof solution. The new building will be constructed on land adjacent to the existing facilities to avoid disruption for gym-goers.

The new complex will be designed to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards, ensuring the highest levels of sustainability and energy efficiency across its lifecycle.

Proposed facilities include a six-lane, 25m swimming pool, a teaching pool, a gym, a five-court sports hall, a wellbeing spa, fitness studios, soft play areas, a four-rink indoor bowls hall, and space for community health services.

If approved, the Springs Leisure Centre rebuild will represent one of Sheffield’s largest recent capital investments in community infrastructure.
