Huddersfield site selected by West Yorks police

Consultation has opened on plans by the service to locate a new station on a former car dealership at 72 Northgate, to support the new district headquarters in Dewsbury.

The existing Huddersfield station would remain in operation until the new facility is operational. Willmott Dixon is delivering Kirklees’ new 100,000 sq ft district HQ in Dewsbury.

Due to its use as a dealership, a large proportion of the Huddersfield site is already given over to hardstanding, said Avison Young, which is running the consultation. Architect Bond Bryan, which last month bought Manchester firm Fairhursts, is the designer.

The site can be accessed from Lower Fitzwilliam Street and Broadway, with these access points intended to be maintained.

Redevelopment of the site would see demolition of existing buildings, replaced by a two-storey L-shaped building fronting the Broadway, with the existing hardstanding serving as a 112-vehicle car park. A new substation is proposed.

The site would accommodate 50 to 100 employees, based on shift patterns.

AY said that a planning application will be submitted soon. The consultation can be viewed online.

Looks better as a run down car showroom – surely Huddersfield deserves something better than this!
