Sheffield to mull Town Hall restoration plans
The future of the grade one-listed landmark will be discussed next week before a project team is appointed to oversee the design work.
The proposed restoration plan includes ensuring the building adheres to current building compliance rules, enhancing accessibility, using a sustainable maintenance model throughout the building, and preserving its historical significance.
Alternative uses for the building such as hotel or other commercial uses will not be considered.
A feasibility study in 2022 outlined a potential £20-50m restoration cost, depending on the scope of works.
The next stage of design work will provide updated costs.
Cllr Tom Hunt, chair of strategy and resources committee and Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “The Town Hall is at the heart of Sheffield’s democracy and public life.
“We are setting out a path to ensure that the Town Hall is fully restored and refurbished so that it can continue to serve everyone in our city.
“This is a significant opportunity and, if proposals are approved, we look forward to working with the public and heritage organisations to undertake this important work.”
How will this be paid for?
