Sheffield chooses architect for Town Hall restoration

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios also worked on phase two of Heart of the City, including grade two-listed Leah’s Yard.

The project will restore and refurbish the building, which dates back to 1897.

It has since become a hub of the city, hosting countless meetings and events as well as thousands of marriages.

The firm has also worked on historic buildings across the country, including the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and Studio, Shrewsbury’s Flaxmill Maltings, and Bath Abbey.

Cllr Tom Hunt, leader of Sheffield City Council and chair of Strategy and Resources Policy Committee, said: “Through this work we will breathe new life into the Town Hall so that the building can continue to serve everyone in our city and be a modern, accessible workplace.”

Cllr Janet Ridler, heritage champion at Sheffield City Council, said: “Our Town Hall is a building of significant architectural and historical importance at the very heart of Sheffield and has been part of our city’s heritage for over 125 years.

“It has witnessed many iconic and historic events and welcomed some of the most important figures of the 19th and 20th century.”

Geoff Rich, partner and director of Heritage and Creative Reuse at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, said: “The project represents an exciting opportunity to complement the building’s unique heritage with inclusive and sustainable design, and to ensure the Town Hall meets the future needs of Sheffield’s communities.”
