Scarborough rebrands Brunswick Centre, agrees Sheffield partnership
In the North Yorkshire town that shares its name, the property group has renamed its retail and leisure asset as Square One, while in South Yorkshire it has formed a strategic partnership with Sheffield Technology Parks.
Scarborough’s Brunswick Centre has been rebranded ahead of a redevelopment based around repositioning the asset as a leisure-first venue, with cinema chain Odeon anchoring the development.
Once complete, the centre will consist of 20 units ranging from 250 sq ft to 20,000 sq ft across three floors, as well as kiosks for independent F&B operators.
North Yorkshire Council has approved support for the project, leading to owner Scarborough Group International preparing to let the units via agents Barker Proudlove and Savills.
At its peak, the Brunswick had an annual average footfall of 7m. The overhaul will focus on providing bars, restaurants, and shops, with a new entrance improving connectivity between the high street and the seafront.
Nicola Bulley, group head of marketing at SGI, commented: “We’re excited to roll out the new brand as we move towards the construction phase and look forward to announcing an exciting line-up of new occupiers very soon.”
Busy on all fronts, SGI has also signed a strategic partnership agreement with tech incubator Sheffield Technology Parks, aimed at enhancing commercial opportunities for innovators in sports, wellbeing and healthtech at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, where the developer is the city council’s development partner.
The park is already home to the English Institute of Sport Sheffield, iceSheffield, Canon Medical Arena, LivingCare Medical Diagnostic Centre, Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre and National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering, and UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park.
STP has been brought in to enhance the overall occupier experience.
Established more than three decades ago, STP has become a cornerstone of the city’s technology and innovation landscape, currently hosting 30 tech or tech-enabled businesses. Offering serviced office and lab spaces along with specialised support for start-ups and scale-ups, STP looks to foster an inclusive and collaborative community, closely connected to the wider tech ecosystem.
The initial focus will be on building a supportive business community at Landing Pad, SGI’s dedicated incubation centre, including the introduction of a business lounge.
“This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for the continued development of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park as we move forward with our ambitious plans to expand the commercial space offerings available and enrich the experience of those choosing to work here,” said Ian Sanderson, who joined SGI as estates and development consultant this June with a brief to accelerate SOLP.
Chief executive of STP, Tom Wolfenden, added: “Working together, we want to not only boost the growth prospects and success for the businesses at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, but also strengthen the region’s position as a hub for innovation and technological excellence by attracting national and international organisations to the Park.
“We’ve been able to make real progress over the past years in creating an ecosystem where digital technology companies can thrive. Now I’m excited to focus on the sports, health and wellbeing industries – an already exciting scene in Sheffield – and create mutual benefit for all parties as we build an even stronger reputation in this area of innovation.”
