Robertson completes seventh University of Sheffield project
The £8.4m refurbishment of Elmfield Building included internal alterations, a new external lift, and the creation of a floor above an existing lecture theatre.
Originally built in the 1930s for the Department of Glass Technology, the building is now home to the Department of Politics and Economics.
The 14-month project also included upgrades to the building’s infrastructure, including the removal of asbestos, maintenance of the roof, façade, and windows, and the modernisation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Supporting the University’s net zero targets, a new fuel saving heating system was installed, as well as upgraded insulation and energy efficient glazing.
Jonathan Sizer, regional managing director, Robertson Construction Yorkshire & East Midlands, said: “The completion of the Elmfield Building marks another successful handover as we continue to work in close partnership with the University of Sheffield.
“We’ve transformed this facility into a modern, accessible, and sustainable space that will serve students and staff for years to come.
“By reimagining the layout, upgrading infrastructure, and prioritising sustainability, we’ve delivered a high-quality solution tailored to the University’s needs.”
Mark Holden, associate director of estates development, University of Sheffield, said: “Buildings such as this are an important part of the University’s heritage, but are often challenging to upgrade to modern standards.”
