Revised Scarborough West Pier plans unveiled
Proposals for the historic pier are supported by £20.2m of funding from the government’s Local Regeneration Fund, alongside council capital investment.
The scheme aims to restore and modernise the ageing harbour asset, which has suffered decades of exposure to harsh marine conditions.
Plans include the repair and refurbishment of historic buildings, the construction of new flood-resilient commercial space, upgraded public facilities, improved pedestrian routes, and a new events plaza.
The project is designed to safeguard the pier’s role as a working harbour while creating new opportunities for businesses and visitors.
Updated proposals include enhanced fishing industry facilities, such as new bait sheds and welfare amenities, while retaining space for a future boat lift and potential pier expansion.
The revised scheme follows feedback from harbour users and stakeholders, with changes including the removal of proposals for a restaurant on the pier and a greater emphasis on supporting harbour operations.
Planning and listed building consent applications for earlier redevelopment proposals were submitted in February 2024, and feedback from that process has been carefully considered while developing the revised proposals.
A public consultation on the plans is now underway and will run until 13 July, helping to shape the final design ahead of a planning application.
Executive member for open to business, Cllr Mark Crane said: “This project provides a valuable opportunity to transform the harbour and safeguard it for future generations.
“Many of the facilities on the West Pier are in urgent need of investment. Our aim is to revitalise the pier so it can continue to support local businesses, while also becoming a more attractive and sustainable destination that can drive growth in the town.
“While some buildings that are no longer fit-for-purpose will need to be demolished to make way for new development, others will be carefully repaired to ensure Scarborough’s maritime heritage is preserved and celebrated.
“I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to shaping these proposals so far and would encourage people to review the plans and share their views.”
