Ravensthorpe station to shut its gates

The railway station in Dewsbury will be closed from 14 December until summer 2028 as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade while a new station is constructed.

The new station will be built around 200 metres west of its current position, which will be fully accessible with a redesigned forecourt, improved drop-off areas, a four-track layout, and a longer platform that will enable the station to cope with longer trains and higher passenger capacity.

Works will be carried out by the TRU West Alliance, made up of Network Rail, BAM Nuttall, Amey, and Arup and will also involve the construction of Baker Viaduct and installing overhead electric lines.

In the meantime, replacement bus services will operate between Ravensthorpe and Dewsbury.

The redevelopment of Ravensthorpe railway station is part of one of the biggest civil-engineering sites in the country known as Ravensthorpe Triangle, with notable work so far including the installation of concrete beams to form the new Calder Road bridge, the installation of piers for the new Baker Viaduct, and utility diversions on Thornhill Road as part of road and track realignment work.

Andrew Campbell, TRU sponsor, said: “The closure of Ravensthorpe station marks the beginning of a pivotal phase for TRU and perhaps one of the most significant projects within the programme – the scale of work being undertaken in Ravensthorpe serves as a great indicator of the upgrades that will be delivered here.

“The four-tracking over a brand-new viaduct and through a modernised station means customers will benefit from faster, more reliable journeys across the Pennines with greater capacity.

“We’d like to thank the community for their understanding as we deliver these major upgrades.”
