Plans submitted for former Burtons factory site in Leeds

Avant has been floating the idea of a mixed-use development since October, and has now applied for permission to build a £100m, 302-home scheme on the 49-acre site, with 8.5 acres reserved for employment use.

Located in Burmantofts, the site will be named Montague Place after Sir Montague Burton, who founded the factory in 1921.

The initial phase will see 302 energy-efficient homes made up of three- and four-storey apartment blocks and semi-detached and terraced homes ranging from one- to four-bedrooms.

Previously, up to 500 homes was touted, although following public consultation this has been reduced.

Avant Homes will pay homage to the heritage of the site by retaining a number of features including art deco motifs and Burton signage panels.

At its height, the factory was the largest employer in Leeds, employing 10,500 people and producing 30,000 suits per week for the Burton tailoring chain, which became the Burton Group.
