Leeds to consider university’s BEEC plans

Leeds Beckett University’s plans for outline permission to build a new home for its School of Built Environment, Engineering, and Computing will be discussed this Thursday.

Although the details haven’t been finalised, the maximum developable area being applied for is 132,000 sq ft and the building will be made up of two blocks, one between six- to eight-storeys, with a smaller block of four- to five-storeys.

The site is off Woodhouse Lane, on land currently used as a carpark.

The project team includes FaulknerBrowns, Buro Happold, DPP, Turner & Townsend, Gillespies, Bowman Riley, and JCA.

The planning statement, prepared by DPP, noted that replacing the current surface car park would not only be a better use of space, it would also reduce the number of car journeys into the city centre and encourage the use of public transport.

Currently, the BEEC courses are spread between multiple buildings on both the Headingley and city campuses, so the university hopes that by creating a single base for the disciplines, it will foster an improved student experience.

The building will be net zero and have a BREEAM Excellent rating.
