Huddersfield market refurb progresses
Kirklees Council is seeking feedback on designs for the grade two-listed Victorian market building being brought forward alongside phase one of the town’s Our Cultural Heart project.
Plans are for the market to provide traditional food and beverage offerings alongside event space.
Research was undertaken to determine the original paint colours used when it was first built in 1887 and the pinks, reds, and creams will be ‘faithfully restored’, alongside essential repairs on the cast iron frame structure.
Two new buildings are also proposed, as well as an outdoor market yard. Designs show both permanent fixed stalls with power and water provision for traders such as fishmongers, and demountable stalls that can be rearranged according to individual requirements.
Work on the Northumberland Street market complements the redevelopment of Queensgate Market and Huddersfield Library, currently underway with BAM as contractor.
The renovation of the market is part of the Huddersfield Blueprint and follows £16.5m of government funding announced in November 2023.
Members of the public can comment on the plans from 22 November until 23 December, and those wishing to see the designs and the project team in person can visit the market on 23 November and 26 November.
Cllr Graham Turner, cabinet member for finance and regeneration, said: “Huddersfield Market is already a popular town centre location where people like to visit and support local businesses and through this investment we want to ensure it remains so for generations to come.
“These plans would drive more footfall by giving people even more reasons to visit, with room to enjoy seasonal events and socialise with friends and family.”
Ruined a good town very little left fortune spent on the ugly sculptures in the only place with any decent shops no longer worth visiting 😕
