Green light for Redrow
Phase one of Monks Cross Garden Village sailed through York’s recent planning meeting, meaning the developer is now able to start work on the first 314 homes at the 164-acre scheme.
In total, the garden village scheme will deliver 970 homes alongside a primary school, sports pitches, a shop, and a country park and will be built by a consortium of housebuilders.
The wider project team includes Johnson Mowat, landscape architect Plan-it, and transport consultant Optima.
Based on the northern parcel of the site, Redrow’s plans include 30% affordable homes, landscaped public areas and walking and cycling connections.
Sticking to the original garden village concept championed by Sir Ebenezer Howard, the layout will include green streets, tree-lined avenues, and easy access to open spaces.
The garden village will be developed in carefully planned phases over the next decade, with major infrastructure and green spaces delivered alongside new homes.
John Handley, managing director for Redrow Yorkshire, said: “This approval marks an exciting step for our Monks Cross Garden Village, with work due to start later this year.
“It will set the tone for a high-quality sustainable community, inspired by our placemaking principles and designed for modern family life. We look forward to starting work on site and seeing the first residents move in.”
