Green light for Estate Buildings refurb

Huddersfield’s cabinet has given the go-ahead for a development partner to be appointed on the project, which will see £1.25m of One Public Estate Brownfield Land Release funds used on the grade two-listed property.

Part of the Huddersfield Blueprint, the building will be used to create high quality, city centre housing in Huddersfield.

Work is due to start this summer, and will mainly comprise internal works such as stripping-out, removing asbestos, and treating dry rot.

Designed by local architect W. H. Crossland, the Estate Buildings dates back to the late 1800s and an effort will be made to retain original features such as wall paneling, stained glass, and intricately carved fireplaces.

Cllr Graham Turner, cabinet member for finance and regeneration, said: “Having support from a development partner is crucial for the project and will make sure we can carry out further restoration works to this important and beautiful building.

“Bringing this heritage building back to life for people to live in is a vital part of our blueprint vision within Huddersfield to create a vibrant place to live, work and play, and future-proofing the town for many generations to come.

“I hope this is the first of many projects that will see more people living in the town centre.”
