Government pledges £426m to Forgemasters

Sheffield’s steelworks is owned by the Ministry of Defence and the latest funding is to protect 700 jobs at the plant and create 900 construction roles.

Plans to build a new 400,000 sq ft plant at the site were approved in February, expected to be operational by 2028.

The project team consists of Arup, which handled the ecological and travel assessments, Bond Bryan Architects, and JLL.

The expansion of Forgemasters is part of plans to create an advanced manufacturing facility in Sheffield’s industrial Lower Don Valley.

Defence secretary John Healey said: “This investment is important at a time when global threats are rising.

“We recognise we need to invest in our defence and Armed Forces. But a country’s military is only as strong as the country standing behind it.

“Forgemasters is a shining example of what we have in the UK, of innovation and traditional industry, and it demonstrates how defence is an engine for growth in jobs and investment right across the country.”
