Esh starts on Brighouse revamp
The final stage of the town’s £19m regeneration project will be carried out in three phases over the next 18 months, and will include the pedestrianisation of a number of roads.
Extensive street planting and additional seating will complete the town centre upgrades, with Calderdale Council hoping the work leads to ‘a more welcoming, attractive, and healthy’ environment.
The £19.1m funding has come from the Town Fund, and has also been used to deliver the town’s market revamp, which completed in November.
West Yorkshire-based Triton led on the construction of the £3m market on behalf of Calderdale Council, on a project team led by Turner & Townsend with Bond Bryan Architects.
The canalside site now includes 21 fixed stalls, each equipped with water, drainage and power, with seating areas for people to socialise.
The town centre work now underway is being carried out by Esh Construction, and will pedestrianise the central sections of Commercial Street and Bethel Street, between Market Street and Park Street.
Traffic flow and street parking will be affected while works are ongoing.
The project will mean changes to traffic flow and the suspension of some on street parking spaces in addition to road closures over the next 18 months.
Phase one will focus on the west of the town and is expected to complete by summer; phase two will follow after and take place in the eastern part of the town with completion expected in the winter; and phase three will concentrate on the southern area of the town centre and will run from winter until spring next year.
