Elland rail plans finalised 

Calderdale Council has completed its designs for the town’s new £25m train station and shared them with Network Rail for approval.

Designed and set-to-be delivered by Keltbray Infrastructure Services, features already confirmed include a car park and elevated platforms on the embankment accessible by lift, ramp, or stairs from the car park level.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Calderdale Council are jointly delivering the station, aiming to improve links with Leeds, Huddersfield, Bradford, and Manchester.

Calderdale Council has already purchased the land required and will transfer it to Network Rail prior to construction.

It will be located next to the A629, close to Lowfields Business Park.

To support access from the station, plans for the town also include new walking and cycling routes throughout Elland, delivered by Esh Construction. 

The Elland Access Package includes routes from the town centre, and two pedestrian and cycle bridges crossing the River Calder, to connect West Vale, Greetland, and Exley to the new station and Elland.

The station and access package are being delivered by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Calderdale Council, with both projects funded by the Combined Authority’s West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund, and the access package also receiving funding from the Transforming Cities Fund.

The council will be holding a drop-in session at Elland Community Hub on 30 August from 9.30-3.30, for residents to view and comment on the plans.

Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Cllr Sarah Courtney, said: “The new rail station and access package for Elland will transform travel in and around the town, connecting local communities with the station and improving links across the region and beyond.

“Understandably, people are keen to see this work delivered, and we share these ambitions. Along with the Combined Authority we’re working hard to ensure that all the pieces are in place to allow work to begin as soon as possible.”

Cllr Eric Firth, deputy chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee, said: “We are making good progress on Elland Rail Station, having navigated significant challenges the scheme has faced including rising costs due to inflation, supply chain issues and land acquisition.”
