Doncaster Corn Exchange revamp complete

The two-year restoration project was designed by architect Group Ginger, with the £5m works including repairs to the roof, drainage improvements, heritage reconstruction to the windows and stonework, and the removal of a mezzanine floor.

Following its regeneration, the building has a new staircase, lighting including LED feature lighting, improved heating, accessible toilets, new fire doors and a ventilation system.

Gallery flooring and ten retail units on the ground floor have been added.

Market Asset Management will operate the building. The project team also included Doncaster Council, Civic Engineers, Silcock Leedham, and Michael Eyres Partnership as cost consultant.

The Corn Exchange will officially open for retail in spring 2025, although festive events will take place from 30 November and throughout December.

Built in 1870, the grade two-listed building was originally a concert hall and marketplace, and it will remain a market hall with space for pop-up events and concerts.

The Victorian architecture, including the dome, has been retained.

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones said: “Our treasured Corn Exchange has had extensive restoration, bringing it back to its former glory and completing this latest stage of investment to our Doncaster Markets.

“Making the space both more accessible and versatile to thrive in a 21st century city centre, improving the visitor experience and preserving this significant piece of Doncaster history.

“In a nod to its original purpose as a concert hall, the building has also been reconfigured to be able to hold events there for more than 400 people.”

Raymond Linch, managing director of Market Asset Management, said: “With the soft launch set for November, we already have a full calendar of events booked in for the coming months.

“The retail units are set to open in spring 2025 and demand is already high. It’s an exciting time for Doncaster, and we’re proud to have played a part in the Corn Exchange’s next chapter.”
