Demolition contract awarded for Edlington leisure centre
Site clearance is set to begin on the redevelopment of the facility after City of Doncaster Council appointed UDCS Demolition on the first phase of the project.
The contractor is due to begin work in August, marking the next phase of the council’s plans to deliver a new leisure centre on the current site adjacent to Sir Thomas Wharton Academy.
Demolition is expected to be completed by the end of the year, after which the council will confirm the construction programme for the replacement facility.
The demolition package is expected to be technically challenging due to the significant amount of asbestos removal required before the existing building can be safely dismantled.
The new leisure centre was approved by the council’s cabinet in November. Plans include a 25-metre swimming pool, changing facilities, a viewing gallery, a wellbeing suite equipped with Innerva fitness equipment, and food and beverage facilities.
The replacement facility forms part of a wider programme of leisure investment by the council, which has committed more than £35m to leisure facilities across Doncaster over the past five years.
The new centre will be operated by Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust and is intended to provide modern leisure and wellbeing facilities for the local community.
