Barnsley fanzone set for green light

Barnsley Council is looking to make the South Yorkshire football club’s temporary shipping container venue a permanent feature, with display screens, seating areas, and food and drink kiosks.

Designed by HLM Architects, the fanzone will be located within the East Stand car park of Oakwell Stadium, and would therefore result in the loss of 74 parking spaces.

The council is the applicant, as it owns the land.

The proposal is for an area measuring 64 x 20 metres and 135,000 sq ft, that can accommodate 650 people, to be used before football matches.

Primarily operating on match days, the venue will open three hours before kick-off and close when matches begin.

It will also be permitted to open on up to five non-match days per year for events such as live screenings of sports tournaments.
