And finally… Vikings invade Whitby

Fortune favours the bold, as the North Yorkshire seaside town is about to discover, following approval for a former ironmongers to become a Viking-themed bar.

Valhalla York will convert the building on Grape Lane into a ground-floor pub with holiday rental flats on the three levels above, and is expected to open next summer.

Given its proximity to residential buildings, the pub will have to close by 11pm.

Vincent Roberts and Matthew Beddingham are the co-owners and founders of Valhalla York.

In a statement, they said: “Valhalla York has been a real success story and we always dreamed of one day having another venue.

“We love the town, its people, its history and feel of the place and it’ll be a very similar recipe to what makes Valhalla York tick but not quite the same.”
