And finally… opening the Bowling

Bradford’s planning committee met on Wednesday, and approved plans from amateur rugby league club West Bowling that had attracted triple figures both in opposition and support, a rare distinction.

The plans are for playing fields located north of the Horsfall Stadium. At present the playing field comprises two rugby pitches, a football pitch and a cricket field.

On the table is a series of upgrades: improving pitches, improving accessibility, introducing barriers and lighting, and introducing amenity containers. It’s the kind of project not uncommon across the country, and in a general sense opinions rest on whether land left for open public use is better left that way, notwithstanding resources for care and upkeep – or if it is better off curated and cared for, with at some level a cost to be paid.

The tide of public opinion building up to Bradford’s meeting seemed to be in favour of the latter: there were 105 objections, but 195 supporting comments (both sides had a petition).
