And finally… Boro’ cements Revie’s legendary status
Arguably Leeds United’s most famous manager, Don Revie is set to have a mosaic dedicated to him in his home town of Middlesbrough – continuing his rivalry with following manager Clough, who already has three accolades in the town.
As it stands, Clough, also a Middlebrough native, has a statue in the town’s park, a street named after him in Linthorpe, and a plaque on his former home.
This wrong will now be righted, and the metre square mosaic will be erected at Revie’s former school, Archibald Primary School, in full view of passersby.
Revie and Clough’s tumultuous relationship was depicted in the film The Damned United.
Revie was manager of Leeds United from 1961 until 1974, winning the Football League First Division twice and the FA Cup once, before being the England national football team manager for three years.
Clough became manager of Leeds once Revie left, lasting 44 days – during which time, he told players to bin their medals as they had not been won fairly.
Steve Cowgill, Archibald deputy headteacher, said: “We are really proud that our school has such a long history, and are looking forward to working on this exciting project relating to an ex-pupil who went on to be a significant local, and national, figure.”
