And finally… a sticky issue

Sheffield is in line to receive £27,500 to clean up its streets and tackle the gum problem around its Heart of the City development.

The rather brilliantly named Chewing Gum Task Force is funding the efforts, which will be focused around Carver Street.

UK councils spend an estimated £7m a year cleaning up chewing gum, and around 77% of England’s street and a staggering 99% of retail sites are said to be stained with gum.

Established by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, the Chewing Gum Task Force Grant Scheme is available to councils across the UK.

Sheffield’s night-time scene has firmly shouldered most of the blame for the anti-social habit of gum-spitting, with cllr Joe Otten, chair of environmental services and regulation policy committee, saying: “We look forward to being able to clean up pavements heavily stained with gum-litter, upgrading and aligning these areas with the major redevelopments in the city centre.

“We will also be encouraging businesses premises who generate a lot of chewing gum litter – such as those in the nighttime economy – to step up and help us tackle this issue as well as deploying specific campaigns around these businesses.”

Now in its fourth year, the Chewing Gum Task Force has helped 51 other cities across the country to clean gum off pavements and attempt to prevent further littering.
