4D Capital acquires York Handmade Brick Co

Rescuing the bespoke brick manufacturer from administration, the investment firm has added to its building portfolio with the purchase.

York Handmade Brick has provided the building blocks for numerous significant projects both in Yorkshire and further afield, such as Halifax Library, York Art Gallery, York Racecourse, Forbidden Corner, University of York St John, and Mowbray Hall.

National buildings include The Shard, Magdalene College Cambridge, Winchester College, a residential scheme at King’s Cross, and London Bridge Station.

The acquisition has saved 20 jobs and secures the future of the company, which uses traditional techniques to make bricks for both heritage projects and new-build schemes.

It adds to 4D’s building products group, alongside Hepworth Clay – the only large-scale UK manufacturer of vitrified clay pipes and fittings for drainage purposes – which it purchased six months ago.

Alex Silk, founder of 4D, said: “We are delighted to have added York Handmade to our building products group. Like Hepworth, it is a heritage brand producing high quality products and we are very proud to become its custodians.

“We are particularly pleased that Guy Armitage has chosen to work with us in the business. As a fifth generation brickmaker, his knowledge and passion will be integral to us realising our ambitions for the business.”
