£20m confirmed for Doncaster regen
An investment package has been secured for the city, aimed at accelerating construction, refurbishment, and public-realm improvements across the city centre.
The funding includes £7m for the next phase of Doncaster Market’s redevelopment, extending recent work on the Wool Market and Corn Exchange.
The new phase will focus on revitalising indoor and outdoor market infrastructure and creating a larger, more accessible market square intended to support higher footfall and expanded trading space.
A further £5m has been allocated for strategic property acquisition, enabling the purchase and clean-up of disused or derelict buildings in the city centre.
The sites will be prepared for new residential, retail and leisure uses, forming part of a wider regeneration programme to reactivate high-street frontages and bring underused plots back into service.
The package also includes £3m for heritage and cultural asset improvements, covering shopfront refurbishment and restoration work on historic structures.
These buildings will be stabilised, protected and adapted for community or cultural use, with decisions on priorities shaped by local input.
Another £5m will support public-realm enhancements designed to improve the overall city centre environment.
Projects yet to be finalised may include new seating installations, community garden construction, and expanded green spaces, particularly around Gateway One, the city’s developing digital technology hub.
The £20m package complements £81.5m previously allocated to the wider Doncaster area through the Pride in Place Programme, which aims to give communities a central role in shaping future regeneration and development schemes.
Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: “This is a substantial amount of money that will enable us to continue improving the city centre, supporting enterprise, enhancing our high street, bringing disused buildings back into use, and investing in our heritage, including Doncaster Market.
“Doncaster is the newest city in the North of England, with incredible potential and a clear vision to breathe new life into our city centre.
“Over the coming days and weeks, we will be starting the next phase of engagement, so people in Doncaster can help us decide exactly how this money is spent.”
